Danube Day 2019
Danube Day events encourage people to look beyond their national boundaries and consider the multitude of peoples living in the Danube Basin. Across the region, governmental, non-governmental and private sector organisations are working together to make the 16th Danube Day the best yet.
Today, June the 29th, the 14 countries of the Danube Basin jointly celebrate one of Europe's greatestriver systems and the people and wildlife that rely on it. These countries are Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, Ukraine. In 2018, over 200 events took place across the Basin in the weeks either side of Danube Day.
Danube Day 2019 is a celebration of а safer rivers following 25 years of ground-breaking international cooperation. Riverside festivals, public meetings and fun, educational events pay tribute to the Danube rivers, their peoples and the progress being made.
Throughout this week there were in Budapest and in Mosty u Jablunkova in the Czech Republic; and community festivities in Županja, Croatia, and Baykal in Bulgaria. Yesterday was the turn of Bavaria to mark the day with activities that inspired the very youngest Danubites to care for their rivers. Such events strengthen our "Danube solidarity": in spite of different cultures and histories, we have a shared desire and responsibility to protect our precious resource.
How people use, enjoy and cooperate over their rivers will be directly affected by the events of Danube Day 2018. There's still time to join in and help make the decisions that affect your river.
