100 Years of Bulgarian School in Budapest

   On February 25, 1918, the first Bulgarian school was established in the Hungarian capital behind the homeland, says Svetla Kyoseva, director of the Bulgarian Language School (Bolgár Nyelvoktató Nemzetségi Iskola) in Budapest. The creation of the school is one of the priority tasks of the Bulgarian MP Ivan Stojanovic-Agleleto. The care of the school is also taken over by the Bulgarian Consulate-General, because the emigrants are Bulgarian citizens. In a letter from the first director of the school Konstantin Spirov to the Minister of State Stojanovic, the lack of premises, equipment and teaching materials slows down the opening of the school. Until February 20, 30 students were searched and enrolled. Of them, however, on the day of the opening only 18. From the director's letter, it is clear that the children study in Hungarian schools and come to learn Bulgarian further. At the same time, children who did not attend any school were also attracted. Meanwhile, from Sofia, they send targeted "temporary ordinances" for organizing the Bulgarian church-school municipalities, which set a framework, leaving everything else in the local context. Thus, in 1916, the church-school municipality adopted its Statute in 1920. The name of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and School Municipality in Budapest is established, whose main task is to support the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the Bulgarian National School in the Hungarian capital. A municipal fund for the building of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and School was also set up. School board trusts three-member school boards.

   On Lonya Street, the school is 4 years old and the associated costs are paid by donations. In accordance with the changes in the Bulgarian educational system (since 1921 compulsory basic education in Bulgaria is seventh-class), the school in Budapest has also opened an upper course. The building on 44, Baisa Street, where the Bulgarian Language School is housed, was handed over to the Bulgarian Embassy for the purposes of the school in March 1955. During the school year 1955-1956, it began its studies there. This means that it goes under the control of the Bulgarian Ministry of Education. (The formerly opened schools in Pecch and Miskolc were turned into branches of the Budapest school, but they soon became a burden on the ministry and it closed them down.)

   Since the beginning of the 1970s a kindergarten has been functioning at the Bulgarian Hristo Botev Primary School and in 1981 it has been transformed into a Unified Secondary Polytechnic School with a training and professional tourism complex. After signing an agreement between the Bulgarian and Hungarian Ministry of Education, it was renamed in 1994 to the Bulgarian-Hungarian language school "Hristo Botev". This name exists until its closure by the Ministry of Education and Science in 2011, which ends a historical stage in the development of Bulgarian education in Hungary. His traditions are inherited from the Hungarian Language School in Budapest, established in 2004 within the educational system of Hungary. It provides additional knowledge of Bulgarian language and science for children at school and preschool age. The classes are conducted in full Bulgarian language. It is funded by the Hungarian government, but it also receives assistance from Bulgaria. The school teaches over 90 children aged 6 to 19 years.
