Rail transport is a priority for Europe in the next programming period 2014-2020, as it’s more environmentally friendly than road transport. While the construction of roads is easier than building railways, trains transported more goods and passengers.
Official delegations from Bulgaria and Romania, led by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Anton Ginev and Secretary of State in the Ministry of Transport of Romania Julian Matache, were the first to crossover the newly built railway track along the Danube Bridge Vidin- Calafat.
From today passenger train Craiova-Vidin and Vidin-Craiova will travel twice daily.
The newest bridge over the Danube carries two vehicle lanes and a central railway line. There is a difference of nearly 30 meters in the levels of the Bulgarian and Romanian banks at Vidin-Calafat and road and railway approaches were built on the Bulgarian side. Due to the long length of the bridge, one of the largest expansion joints on the Balkan peninsular was specially designed, manufactured and installed on the Bulgarian side.
