During his visit Wolfgang Michels, desk officer for Bulgaria at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of the Republic of Germany, expressed his satisfaction that the last technical difficulties relating to the completion of the bridge were being resolved and that the works will be finished as soon as possible.
Mr Michels’ visit to the bridge was made in the course of an information tour of the different projects Germany is engaged in implementing in Romania and Bulgaria. Intensive preparation processes mean that these projects are still ongoing even after the official conclusion of bilateral cooperation.
Mr Michels said he was particularly impressed by the scale of this construction project and he was happy to see that German funds had been well invested in contributing to this prestigious project, which provides a long-awaited connection to Central and Western Europe.
Germany’s development cooperation has been aimed at supporting Bulgaria’s transformation process and also regional stability efforts in the Balkans. To this end, Germany’s involvement has mainly focused on vocational training, sustainable economic development and infrastructure (transport and municipal services). With Bulgaria joining the European Union on 1 January 2007, the final commitments from Germany’s federal budget were made in 2006.
