New border crossing between Bulgaria and Romania
Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and his Romanian counterpart Mihai Tudose opened the new Kaynardzha-Lipnitsa border crossing point today, announced the press center of the Council of Ministers.
The opening of the border post was set as early as 2003, when the government of Simeon Saxe-Coburg Gotha negotiated with the Romanian state the opening of two new points - near Kainardja and near the village of Severnyak in Krushari municipality, Dobrich district. An intergovernmental agreement between Bulgaria and Romania for joint border control has been in force since 2007 and the opening of the point is in line with a Bulgarian-Romanian agreement of 2012.
The border post was built on a project funded with 6 million euros from Romania-Bulgaria Cross-Border Cooperation Program, which is administered by Bucharest. On the Bulgarian side a 17 km road was built, which connects with the Romanian municipal center of Lipnitsa. However, the Bulgarian road was two-lane, while the Romanian road with 4 and due to the difference in gauge the road was closed for a long time. During the office of Ognian Gerdjikov, in March 2017, it was agreed to work from 8am to 8pm, and only cars with a weight of up to 3.5 tons would pass through, with heavy traffic being banned.
Pursuant to the Agreement, and in line with the Schengen Borders Code, the road border crossing is built on Romanian territory, with facilities for border checks being provided for both Romanian and Bulgarian border police authorities.
In Varna, on the Black Sea coast, a bilateral meeting between government delegations from both countries was held, which culminated in the signing of a joint declaration.
