The long-awaited day for
The Danube Bridge Vidin Calafat was inaugurated today in the presence of: the European Commissioner, senior officials from Bulgaria and Romania, the Bulgarian Patriarch, representatives of the diplomatic corps from both sides of the river, numerous officials, media representatives from all Europe, representatives of the Constructor of the Bridge – FCC Construccion and the Bridge Supervision, numerous citizens.
With a solemn religious ceremony, performed by His Holiness, the Bulgarian Patriarch Neophyte, together with His Grace the Vidin Bishop Dometian and representatives of the Bulgarian and Romanian Orthodox Church was consecrated the second bridge over the Danube between Bulgaria and Romania.
In their speeches the Bulgarian and Romanian representatives of the Governments emphasized the enormous role of Danube Bridge for the rapprochement between the two nations and the rest of Europe and Asia. It makes Vidin a cross-point of our relations with Europe” said the Chairman of the Bulgarian Parliament Mihail Mikov
The Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria, Plamen Oresharski called the bridge – “A Symbol of Hope”. The Romanian Prime Minister, Victor Ponta made special thanks to the European Commissioner for Regional Policy, Johannes Hahn, for his help and frequent visits during the construction of the Bridge. The Commissioner Hahn himself emphasized on the importance of the bridge for the two Regions Vidin and Dolj and expressed his confidence that within a few years we will begin to draw the positives from this construction.
Guests at the ceremony on the part of the Constructor of Danube Bridge Vidin – Calafat – FCC Construccion were: Fernando Moreno / President Chairman of FCC Construction, Javier Lázaro / Deputy General Director, José Manuel, San Miguel/ Area Manager, Alberto Vergara – Project Manager “Danube Bridge Vidin-Calafat”, Rafael Huerga – Deputy Manager and etc. The ceremony was attended by the Designer of the bridge – eng. Antonio Martinez Cutillas
The ribbon was cut by two workers from Romania and Bulgaria who have been working on the site since its commencement to date.
This bridge, long 1971 m, is pride for FCC Construccion – the company that has constructed thousands kilometers of highways and railways, overpasses, bridges and tunnels in Europe, America, Africa.
